Meet Paula Smith, Military Caregiver Advocate

MSAN’s advocates are always ready to support–and that’s because they’ve been exactly where you have been, too.

That’s no exception for MSAN’s Military Caregiver Advocate, Paula Smith, who brings her expertise and kindhearted nature to the HUB every Sunday. With years of caregiving experience, Paula shares her go-to resource and hopes to expand awareness to the entire community.

As one of the newest members of the advocates team, what drew you to volunteering with MSAN?

The opportunity to advocate for others through service is a dynamic opportunity!  Military spouses are a thriving population demographic and when my son’s status transitioned from military child to military spouse I wanted to stay relevant and connected to this population.

Tell us about you! Where are you from? How long have you been a military spouse?

I am a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and I have been a military spouse for 30 years and counting. Golf is my game–I love to travel and when I can travel and play golf …it is Nirvana! I love to journal and write poetry as well!

Do you have personal experience with caregiving?

Yes, in addition to caring for two amazing children I provided care for my late husband. I also provide care for my aging mom and my community at large. Caregiving is an art form and my palette is colorful!

What do you wish people knew about caregiving in the military community?

It is my intent that our military community expand their thinking of caregivers as just for “old people.” According to the American Heart Association and AARP, there are 3.4 million caregivers under the age of 18. And we give care to pets, plants and vehicles no matter our age!

What is your go-to resource to share and why?

The Veterans Administration! The VA provides comprehensive updates and suggestions for caregivers of Veterans. The information supports caregiving as a whole and is easy  to follow and implement.

How do you hope to help the military community through your role with MSAN?

I hope to co-create better social worlds for all humanity through our discursive practices. If our communities know they have advocacy regardless to age, race, or gender, purpose driven practices will drive our futures!

To connect with Paula and other advocates, be sure to join the HUB!
