Networking to Build Your Career Connections
As January draws to a close, I want to wrap up the career exploration focus by talking about networking. We already checked out assessment and career exploration tools as well as informational interviewing. Today I am going to talk about building your network.
Networking is key, especially for military spouses as we move. There are some tools for networking and I'm going to target just a few today. Please share other ways you have successfully networked.
LinkedIn was made for professional networking and is an ideal networking tool for military spouses. Remember, as you prepare to PCS to kick your networking into high gear on the site. A few tips:
Join professional groups related to your occupation and alumni groups.
Join the Veteran Mentor Network Group (spouses are welcome). This is a HUGE group that has professionals in many career fields. Search the group for those who are in the area you will be PCS to as well as others in your career field.
Target companies in the area you will PCS to - connect to recruiters and others in your field.
When connecting to someone on LinkedIn, add a personal note and let them know why you are connecting.

Professional Organizations

Current and Former Colleagues
As you prepare to PCS, talk to your current organization to see how you might retain your position or stay with the organization. Also reach out to former colleagues (LinkedIn is great here).
Social Media
Let your network know that you are searching for a position. Be specific. Don't just say you are looking for a job (or some smart-alec like me will say "Walmart is hiring."). State something like, "I'm getting ready to move to this area and would love to continue on my career path in this field.” Name the job that would be a promotion for you!
